Use of Language
[frowning]
And yes, this is a rant!
Recently in one thread I've adressed a proposal to someone in an other thread thinking he knows what I talk about. The response was nothing more but offending, rude language beneath any level of sophisticated communication. I think persons which adress such words to someone else are brainwashed by internet, cuz I don't believe they 'd dare calling "names" when looking the opponent in the eyes.
Of course, Writing lacks facial expression and the possibility to listen to intonation of words. This leads to misunderstanding and misinterpretation. This to avoid are emoticons for. They at least should help to see the position of a sentence.
But I will not under any circumstances be silent when someone comes and adresses rude language to me. Rude language is not acceptable when adressed to a person. It has to do with respect for the other one to avoid rude words when discussing with him.
And yes, I admit, I use rude words sometimes too, but I never adress such words to someone when discussing with him. The Art is to know when and in which situation to use them for not to offend the others one talks to.

Thanks for your really magnificient audience, guys 'n' gals. Sometimes it is hard not to be zynic.
@df:Tolerance goes far, but I won't tolerate rude words adressed to me. there are always other ways to say something. There HAS to be a certain level of communication.

Re:Use of Language
The main problem I see with the Internet as a form of communication is that the "speaker" rarely has any kind real consequences awaiting him should he behave rudely. Of course, a person can be banned, but it is just as easy to log-in anonymously from a different computer when they want to flame somebody.
Re:Use of Language
It's not that because it's the internet, some unspoken social measures are taken. Avoidance is one of those measures. You can see that an @$$ in real life will be avoided by people, leaving him all alone. The same thing goes with the internet. You can't punch him in the face, such consequences aren't possible, but the non-physical ones (which are all much harsher) are still possible. The person you're talking to'll get what he'll deserve if he keeps such an attitude up. No need to worry 'bout that.

Sometimes it's hard to mantain an attitude towards situations like this; and fighting is problably such a bad attitude as the abusive language.
Receiving abusive language, is like receiving a gift... if you don't take the gift, who's gonna keep it?

Re:Use of Language
Yah....The first topic about me.
The problem was that you called me GAY.
Otherwise I wouldn't say such things but you....so ban me if you think that's right but that was an insult...

Re:Use of Language
And why exactly is being called gay (which he didn't IMHO) an insult?
Isn't saying that being called gay is an insult, in itself an insult towards all gay people?

Re:Use of Language
I thought you said you were only joking. I know Beyond Infinity and all the rest were. If it came over as if we really meant it, I for one am really sorry. As Beyond Infinity said, intonation and underlying tone're really difficult (if not impossible) to notice in written word. It was never meant to be taken seriously. If it were in real life, I know that you'd understood it from the beginning.
Again, we're terribly sorry if it made you angy:-\
