Well, it has so much to do with the holocaust as that the Israeli astronaut carried a picture of the moon landscape on board, which was drawn by a child in a concentration camp during the second world war.

@SMG: Why will history take a different turn from here? This is a very, very tragic event, but I don't see how history will change now. They will surely invest even more in the safety of the spaceships now (or continue the project on a new shuttle design which they abandoned last year), but human space fligt will continue, and there will still be horrible accidents like this one.

On the contrary if youlistened to those press confrences...then you shoud have heard about all the changes projected in nasa's ways of doing things...this could mean robotic powered space missions to farther away places that humans normally couldnt have gone...

or they might just start training monkeys.

Point/Conterpoint/and some questions...

Question: Was the drawing from a child who was placed in the Dora camp, specifically, one Ilse Pokler? (caught a whiff of that Par-a-noiiiiiii-A... If anyone reads Thomas Pynchon, this question mightl make sense. Otherwise... it won't)

-I believe it was 1984 that the Challenger exploded on take-off. US kids were actually all gathered around to watch. So, every US kid in school that day saw a shuttle explode seconds after launch with one of the most popular astronauts in American history, a teaher named Christa McAullaugh. The news had made a big deal out of her before the shuttle launch, because she was a teacher and not in aerospace, etc. Anyway, it may have had an impact on the space program, but it should be noted that....

-There is a history of people dying in the space industry in really horrible ways, but far fewer than died in, say, cars.

-The space-capable rocket was invented by German scientists funded by the Nazis. Fact: the same technology used to miraculously transport man to the moon was used to blow the crap out of London. The Blitz, hello? How many people died then?

-NASA actually "bought" some of those German scientists, by the way.

-NASA and the aerospace industry in general has opposed independent and corporate shuttle flights for years, even though the technology is becoming increasingly capable and useable by an increasing sector of the skilled public. I should mention that those same German scientists that were taken from Germany after World War II who had created the miracle of the rocket had started out as hobbyists. And I mean, literally, a bunch of geeks who built toy rockets and blew stuff up for fun. So, we should already have better designs for launchers and payloads and shuttlecraft, etc., but NASA is keeping out a great deal of technological expertise for FREE because they snub the hobbyist and the commercial entities.

So, I'm hardly surprised that their crappy old shuttle exploded, and my heart goes out to anyone riding in a shuttle older than my decommissioned minivan. (Which I also won't use, because it is UNSAFE)

Just to set the record straight, the Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986.

Even thought the Israeli astronaut carried Holocaust art with him on board, it still doesn't explain why the press were getting into detail about how the current shuttle disaster is related to the Holocaust. It was simply a coincidence, much like the location where the Columbia exploded, near Palestine, Texas. I'm sure all of this is gold to conspiracy theorists...

Isn't is strange how the space program came to be? One other thing you didn't mention in your list of NASA-Nazi connections is the former head of America's space program, Werner von Braun, was a former Nazi himself.. and he headed the American space program for over a decade! (of course EVERYTHING in Germany was Nazified at that period of time)

Ever seen the movie October Sky? What you wrote reminded me of that story how a bunch of kids made and designed rockets of their own, ultimately earning scholarships and positions within NASA.

You bring up an interesting point about how the nationalized space agencies are the exclusive outlet for everything space related (if you want to send up a satellite or take a space tour, you call the Russians or get a career in NASA)... what would be the negatives to privatizing space?

Would private companies will be more lax on safety than government programs? That's what laws and regulations are for..

Would private companies "pollute" space more? There are already tens of thousands pieces of space junk just floating around that could tear through a spaceship like paper...

Frankly, I think NASA just doesn't want to see its comfy position budged by some private company that could challenge its technological expertise (question is would they SHARE this expertise, hmm...)


Of course, I'm forgetting about the big source of the problem here. The fact is interest in space in general is growing.. people understand the benefits of a space program and what kind of advances it can bring to humanity (cell phones, GPS systems, just to name a couple), but we are limited by whatever dwindling funds are being doled out to the nationalized space organizations. If space was opened up to the private sector tomorrow, you would see an explosion of funding into applications of all kinds, a veritable renaissance. So either it's privatization or increase funding to the already existing space programs... take your pick.

Not to mention that the funding for the space programs (the maintenance sectors in particular) have been cut so badly that the whole program's become unsafe...
