I'm really curious to know about jobs the moderators are doing ??

Also i want to know is it possible to maintain your(general speaking) interest in programming even if you are not working as a programmer ?

Since I can keep my interest on snooker while not being a fulltime sportman, and I can keep my interest on wine while not work on wine-related industry, I suppose yes.

Ironically, I've always wondered the reverse: if I were spending all day programming, would I come home and feel like doing programming as a hobby? I suspect that getting a job as a programmer would mean the end of my project, but (for better or worse) never had to find out.

Cheers,

Brendan

Same here. I almost considered Computer Science for my University Degree, but didn't want to ruin a perfectly good hobby (besides the fact that I wanted something where I interact with the public more than CS would have allowed.

Nope - I'm an Optometrist with my own practice and insomnia.

Cheers,

This is the reality (at least for me.) I work professionally as a web developer, and occasionally a general developer. I find (as my work load goes up) my desire to work on my hobby programming drops dramatically. I have worked other jobs (non-technical) in the past, and during that time, was much more willing/desired to do more, with my hobby.

Become a TA for an introductory programming course . I help teach programming to children who have never programmed in their life - for them computers are all about facebook , youtube and google. I answer some of the dumbest programming questions. Many of them write in English and expect the compiler to 'understand' what they wrote. Helping them and watching them grow is a humbling experience :)

PS : I am not a moderator - btw all cs jobs need not be that socially isolated. It also has to deal with culture in general , I was a full time sw engineer and was friendly half of the people in the building :D .But that is not how it is in many places

Optometry works for me and I enjoy it - especially now I have the business to run too. However, you need to do what's right for you. I would by no means suggest that my response constitutes any form of careers advice :)

Preferably, you can get a software engineering job that enables you to work on problems that you consider interesting. That way, you can do your hobby at work, for the most part. Not to mention that the resulting product will likely be useful to much more people this way.
