Seeking friends for a "geek" team

Hi all
it was a dream of mine to gather and create a team with tech geeks that could exchange knowledge, information and experience for their own good first - and for society's good next. I decided to try and see how it goes.
So I am seeking for people that breath in the name of technology, development, programming, internet, networks, gadgets and everything related. Someone could say them "hackers". I say "hackers", not "lamers".
I also seek for people which admire the open source community.
I am a tech enthusiast who has over 18 years of experience in computers. I have a little to great experience in: Web development (PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript etc.), C/C++, Assembly/AVR Programming, Networks, Security, Linux/MAC OS & I am also a Windows network administrator, DIY electronics & mods etc. I have a small learning curve in everything I am interested at.
If you think you have experience you can share, beyond the advanced user, drop us a message and let me know!

Are you 19?

This forum works fine. StackOverflow works fine. Reddit works fine. Any of the many development mailing lists dedicated to multiple technology projects work fine.
Just join a project you like most of all and you'll certainly grow a great team of people around you by showing your technical excellence, clear judgement and leadership skills.

I know:
- x86 Assembly
- PHP (not object-oriented yet)
- (Low Level) JavaScript (not object-oriented yet)
- Very basic electronics
If with "experience beyond the advanced user" you mean being a fairly good programmer, then I might be helpful.
I would be interested in joining a real-time chat to share what I'm doing, but it should be fairly active and fairly public so it has good impact (regular visit from several other like-minded programmers would be enough).
I am currently writing an API to read (and write) GIF image files using JavaScript with Typed Arrays.
I am also interested in creating an Atari 2600 emulator in JavaScript+HTML5 as a preparation to build a basic x86 PC emulator with all of its peripherals (I tried to create a standard VGA emulator and I did partially, and also a little x86 CPU emulator with maybe 10 instructions, all of it in JavaScript and HTML5).

I would be interested in knowing how to see first-hand what those professional development teams do, in real time.
Are they by any chance buried always in Freenode?
What is lacking is a real-time set of chat rooms for being able to keep enthusiastic even at the most tedious stages of development, to make one's work immediately available in an adequate way, and I have also seen programming chat rooms in IRC platform. Not that it can't be learned, but it is an additional learning delay.
What I mean is that it isn't "popular" or "mainstream", and so It is difficult to locate real time discussions with other professional programmers. Without that, I doubt that it can be possible to go very far in this kind of top-notch environment.

No I am 90. I have 18 years experience in computers and another 60 in agricultural cultivation and livestock.
Everything you say works fine, so does the fire department => they extinguish fires ! Everything in our world has a purpose (...almost always..) but what does it have to do with my request? I am searching people for a specific reason, I am not into a philosophical quest or something. Thanks for your input, but you are out of subject here.

What I have in mind is that every new member, will decide along with the other members, If a new person has the qualifications to join. I do not aim to gather the el33t of developers, because I am not a super-duper one, but people that really like to learn and progress day by day. It could be nice If everyone's piece of knowledge could fit into another person's one. I know a lot about electronics but wish to learn more of PHP - you know a lot of PHP but want to learn more of python = everyone gives a helping hand to the other.
So do not worry If being a good programmer will be any problem. Of course we can arrange a public chat to discuss openly.
Do not try to find reasons that this might be scam or an idiot idea. If you're into it, you'll know it, just like me, by instinct.

I know
.some c++
.so far 16 bit assembly looking to expand fairly soon
.basic/slightly advanced mac/ios hacking
.intermediate electronics
I am a little rusty on my c++ but a quick little program would fresh that up. The iOS hacking doubt it would come in handy to other people but I have my old ipod touch 4g thinking it is an iphone and looking for a telephone signal. As for electronics I basically know windows, Linux, and mac from inside out, I know basic mac hacking as well. I plan on to learn a little bit more hacking for Ubuntu, ios, mac, and windows.

I have no problems whatsoever about giving away all I do for two somehow simple reasons:
- I am in a learning stage, and I only learn well and fast with well planned cooperation (and many others too, apparently).
- Everything I upload (with no exception) is permanently in the Public Domain, or Creative Commons 0 1.0 Universal at the very most, only if Public Domain is not recognized somewhere.

From my experience chatting with all kinds of people, I should only say that this idea can work perfectly. All that is required is to allow people to go to chat or a website spontaneously, so that they don't feel obligated, and at the same time make visible and easy to find what others have done.
Otherwise, people can feel like fleeing if they feel that somebody is requiring and expecting them to appear in a chat, in specific days and specific times, and more, if they feel that entry requirements are unusually tough (provided we are talking about people with some knowledge/competence above general intellectual incapability in that field) just when they expect a helping site to improve and help from their current level. Eliminating this, there is no problem other than actually doing things.
It is as simple as that, similar to classes like
Udacity,
EDX,
Coursera,
Ars Digita (Aduni),
Khan Academy or others (like YouTube, etc...).
Sadly, they lack real-time open chats beyond class terms or truly collective projects; they are just free classes, although good ones.
Even StackExchange chats are too slow for very specific projects.
As I said, maybe Freenode, but it requires further preparation, and the original offer of this thread is exactly what many of us need to then prepare and leap to the Freenode level.

these sound great. My turn.
My brain-wiki consists of (with a scale 0 to 5, novice to expert):
- C/C++ [4/5] (although a bit rusty cause I have to touch this since university)
- SQL [3.5/5]
- HTML, CSS [5/5]
- PHP [3.5/5] (started to learn PHP almost 1.5 years ago, but made a great progress thanks to c++ oop)
- Javascript [3/5]
- Symfony2 framework [3/5] - I especially love this one.
- My university thesis was a software build on C++ Builder entirely by me, so I have worked a lot with oop and threads. I consciously decided to quit Windows programming because I hate M$
- AVR & assembly [4/5] - I have created many projects with AVRs in C but put a lot of assembly in it. Also I have advanced knowledge of programming a motorola MC68000 directly.
- Linux administration [3.5/5] - Followed this as a hobby since I was 15 yrs old
- I also work as a professional in a big international company by administering Windows and Active Directory. I have many projects to accomplish each year, especially with security.
- I have a great experience with computer hardware. I have worked also as a technician and I have fixed several pieces of hardware with my (soldering) gun
- ...And much more

noone would ask you to stop what you're doing. I am trying to build a limited club of interesting people. That does not require you to stop something else. Even though I like chats, many times I cannot catch up with the discussion there. Discussions that are being made in chat rooms are only temporary; They give you the knowledge you want in 10 minutes and then they disappear.
If we considering the majority of collaboration tools out there, we will see that chat is only an additional tool. Most of them (I work in a company with 50k people worldwide) will communicate in boards like this one and so far it's the best way to do this. Applications like teambox, asana, trello work on a kind of private internal social feed. And I guess it works.
I am risking to be sound arrogant, but If I build this, I will not let everyone in. Just like MENSA is for brain geeks, there will be a challenge to pass and it will not be easy for everyone. But I am looking forward to hear that people that will be members, will be extremely happy and proud about that.

You say you are 90. I'm impressed that you can still hold down a professional IT job for a major corporation. How old were you when you went to University? From what you have told us you must haave been about 70.

Do you find this discussion really interesting? I mean, I didn't laugh... Isn't there anything else more educative you can do ?
try to learn to play a musical instrument for example.

As a 67-year old I am genuinely interested in your experience and the fact that you still manage to find employment in the IT industry at the age of 90. I'm sorry if you interpreted my post in any other way. It is encouraging, if a little surprising, to learn that major corporations are wiling to employ people of your age in such a position.
No, I am not interested in joing any sort of "geek" squad, but I wish you good luck with it. As for a musical instrument - it's 50 years too late to start now.

Hi,
I can program in:
C++
Python
Javascript
Objective C
My interests are mainly in embedded programming these days. I have written a "speech recognition" library for the arduino known as µSpeech. After writing all this, I feel like a primary school kid on his first day of school.

I am trying to create a form in google docs that everyone that wants will fill it and send it... seems the fastest way to gather replies.
I will post it soon.
