You don't need to be arrogant to be confident. I find that arrogance comes from believing that you know everything, while confidence comes from believing that you can learn to do anything if you try. Confidence is, however, a side effect of arrogance, so you often see them together.

Ah, good old Stallman...

i'm not much of a fan of Steve Jobs, but i do recognize him for the impact he's had on the industry. whether the impact is good or bad can be argued. it's sad that he died at such a young age, i knew he wasn't doing very well health-wise but i didn't expect him to go this soon still.

what kind of annoys me though is that in the shadow of jobs dying, another man died last week that influenced the world of computers in an even bigger way but i haven't seen so much as a blurb on any mainstream news source about it. dennis ritchie, father of the C language and co-creator of UNIX.

he had a much deeper impact on almost everything having to do with computing than jobs did. his work even had direct influence on what jobs' OS X is under the hood. Darwin is derived from BSD, which in turn is derived from the original UNIX.

even Windows is directly affected in a HUGE way by Ritchie's work, being that it's written almost entirely in C. good luck finding anything but the simplest of electronic devices that isn't affected by C and/or *NIX.
