I did make one change trying to speed things up even more after you said it was slow. I configured mod_deflate in apache, now the forum index page transfers about 4.4k compressed text instead of 28k of uncompressed text. But I'm sure the distcc jobs don't help (are they nice'd at least?)JamesM wrote:It's not so bad now, actually. I suppose it was still getting half the images into cache when I wrote that. I'm running a "Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz" but it's running linux on a really crappy graphics card plus it usually has 2 or 3 distcc jobs running in the background from people around the office... :/

Re: Site Updates (still in progress)
phpBB3 is done well enough that features like that can be disabled in the administrations area very easily. If everyone agrees with you I'd have no problem turning it off. Personally I just don't like the wordage, I do like the features. The foes feature should help users ignore people that they tend to argue with but it sounds like they are making a list of people to argue with.suthers wrote:I have to say I don't like the 'friends and foes' idea....

Re: Site Updates (still in progress)
I'm definitely looking forward to a possible mtdark2 revival theme, this is too ugly.. and the user-info on the right side instead of the left is very ugly.
I didn't even think to check the main page... just found this today.. *sigh*
EDIT: What about the old pathing? I'm very used to typing "os" and using Firefox's auto-completion to get to the forum... I have a few other sites that start with "for" so this is an unappealing change of address.
EDIT2: subsilver2 is the "most" appealing of the themes, the others are horrible though..

Re: Site Updates (still in progress)
I agree with a previous poster about the 'friends & foes' thing, it's kind of dumb. It would only create flaming and arguing. If you don't like someone, then dont like them... you dont need a button/tag to express that.

Re: Site Updates (still in progress)
I just finished working on this. You may not see all of these changes until you local ISPs dns cache is updated. Some examples:Brynet-Inc wrote:EDIT: What about the old pathing? http://www.osdev.org/wiki/Projects automatically redirects you to http://wiki.osdev.org/Projects
http://www.osdev.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=6 automatically redirects you to http://forum.osdev.org/viewforum.php?f=6
Just for those people that really like their browsers url autocomplete I've also setup:
http://f.osdev.org redirects you to http://forum.osdev.org
http://w.osdev.org redirects you to http://wiki.osdev.org
Re: Site Updates (still in progress)
Or just install Firefox 3 and use the AwesomeBar thingy to do it.

Maybe you can change the wordage to "gurus and trolls", then?chase wrote: Personally I just don't like the wordage, I do like the features.
And I, personally, don't see how anyone could claim that icons on the right is any uglier than icons on the left -- the cosmetic difference is unmeasureable. And anyway, they are on the left when you are not logged in. I think it makes a nice way to see immediately whether you are logged in or not.

Re: Site Updates (still in progress)
Actually, its part of the forum style. ProSilver has user stats on the right, subsilver (default when not logged in) and the majority of other templates have the stats on the left so for me everything's always on the same side. (the subsilver users will not see any obvious differences between anonymous and logged-in state for this reason)bewing wrote:And I, personally, don't see how anyone could claim that icons on the right is any uglier than icons on the left -- the cosmetic difference is unmeasureable. Re: Site Updates (still in progress)
I think i prefered the old site, but the features of the update are welcome, so im sure i'll get used to it.
I have to say though: PLEASE add the latest post above the username in the board index view. I found that so very useful

+1
Also, show of e-thumbs, who wants the mtdark2 theme back?
EDIT: Didn't there used to be a favicon for the forum as well? don't recall.. but seems like it may have.
