Maybe its an issue with Qemu...I did get it to work, but it only works 10% of the time.

I am really not a fan of the redesigned Explorer and Start Menu.

Seriously I don't like this trend of UI's moving towards the same interfaces cellphones have. They're different devices, it's the same reason I like certain games play better on the PC than on consoles. Between Windows 8, Unity and Gnome 3 it's been a horrible year for the desktop interface. I don't want a search box and indexing for everything, I like being able to just double click something or find it on a menu, if I didn't I'd just type it into a terminal anyways. Oh well, there's still XFCE at least...

Oddly enough I do use those features in a web browser pretty frequently, but that's largely due to how difficult it is to memorize an entire URL string or constantly managing bookmarks. When it comes to anything I use somewhat frequently I tend to keep things pretty organized so the search isn't really necessary. I think it's a good system for things that are constantly in flux or distributed pretty sparsely, but that environment shouldn't occur too frequently when it comes to applications and programs.

Your all behind the times, menu UI, like phones and game consoles are are the future  .

Now, how many of you have these types of UI's in your hobby OS's ?.
Remember you should be leading, not following.

I bet not one of you have.

I think there are a few similar UIs shown in the screenshot thread.

I mostly lack user interfaces. Works perfect. Gives nobody an opportunity to do things wrong</countertroll>

Seriously, doing things different is not equivalent to being better. Point in case: read this thread

I agree, but at the end of the day, the main advantage hobby OS's have over mainstream OS's, is the ability to try new idea's.
They may not all work, but if only 1% turns out to be better, then its worth it.

I downloaded Windows 8 today, and first I thought: "Ok, Windows 7 was acceptable, so let's take a look on the next version."
After trying it out for 10 minutes I thought: "Wow, it really sucks."
Seriously, where did all the structure go? In XP, you could (most times) easily find the things you needed. In Vista, things were not as easy as they were. Also in 7. But in 8, I don't find a damn thing.
I, personally, don't want "apps". I want programs, which were written and compiled. And I don't want an OS that I could use with fists, but not with a keyboard.
I ran Windows 8 in VirtualBox, and normally, the performance of the VMs is really good, even when I have a Win7 guest. But with Win8 the performance was horrible. 20 seconds to react to mouse movement? Seriously?
And when it had 1GB RAM, the setup crashed. I reduced it to 512MB, and it worked.

And, really, ribbon menus for the explorer? WHAT? Everything you often need has a shortcut (STRG+C, +V, F2...) and these ribbon menus are ugly, unclear and fat.

I'll keep 7 as long as I can. And then? Goodby, MS. Welcome Linux.
And now excuse me, I have an OS to delete ;)

Damn, get it together people. Fine, Windows isn't the best piece of technology around, but neither is Mac OS X nor the Linux kernel, they all have their flaws. I'm sick and tired of seeing people bashing on either of these operating systems presenting that x is better than y. Don't be a fanboy. Sure, the new look is a very big change and lots of people will have to adjust, but I'm sure if you give it a chance you'll eventually learn to work with it just as well as the previous versions (if you use Windows at all, that is). Most of you who don't like Windows probably switched to another operating system anyway.

And don't say stuff like all the users will stop using Windows because of this cause they won't. The fact is that most of the Windows computer users are people who use it from day-to-day for their jobs (or at home), and aren't techies. They will adapt to the change as necessary (be it with or without complaining).

It's natural for people to be resistant to change (in fact, the bigger the change, the greater the resistance). There is a reason there is a whole tree of management devoted to change (which obviously Microsoft didn't care much for up until now).

Sorry, didn't know we weren't allowed to have and express opinions. Yes its a change that people will have to get used to. But the issue here is "is the change actually positive" and is bring discussed. In my opinion, its not a good change. And yes, in my opinion, Linux is a better operating system. Is it perfect? No. But thats not the point. I think that linux works better for me, and others may find that Windows works better. What I find even more annoying than the classic operating systems war is when people try to say "Hey, it doesn't matter! Lets not discuss this! Don't be a fanboy!", because the discussions can be interesting and good. So, in short, don't go to a thread that is clearly not a problem or flame war and try to tell people to stop discussing it and stop being "fanboys" (which is a stupid word, by the way. Yes, I have my opinions).

Well atleast you guys can run it, Ive tried VPC and Virtual Box All randomly Expanding files at 10 or 30% freezing the mouse, but the dots continue to animate, goes nowhere tho.

I do agree (Like in my last post) They have added more useless things to the top, and the start menu looks like they went on using paint for designs.

Just because they say "Were moving to phones from computers" doesnt mean they have to make us hate computers to move to phones.

You are absolutely allowed to have opinions. But whenever I skoop around the internet and read articles about Windows 8, there is always someone who starts a flamewar there about it absolutely sucking (and usually, they haven't even given it a chance yet). It just sometimes pisses me off. I perfectly understand why one would like Linux better (I use it myself too), but does every thread about Windows have to become a bash on it? I remember another recent topic here on OSDev where someone said "Why you would want to use Windows is beyond my comprehension" (not his/her exact words) and that just pisses me off: why don't you let that up to the user and keep your opinions for threads where this is actually discussed (like this one).

I'm sorry if I offended anyone, and fanboy is indeed a horrible word. Sadly there are a lot of them around who don't want to see any farther than their own OS (I wasn't pointing at the OSDev community with that statement btw, but more at the people on other newssites).

More on topic on the other hand, I've also tried Windows 8 in VirtualBox and it worked fine (be it a bit graphics-laggy in metro and not supporting the guest additions yet). I think Microsoft should work more on disabling components from the installer. I believe they're somewhat moving towards this through the MinWin kernel (they've been trying to move more and more components out of the kernel since Vista).
