It depends, of course, on the particular software engineer. Some do write code. Many don't. I personally wouldn't want to be an SE who doesn't do any programming. How boring! All that design & effort just to hand it off to someone else to put the pieces together? Not for me man ;)

Even though these two computer disciplines have a few programming fundamentals in common, but the concentration and emphasis of each of these degrees differ significantly. A software engineering degree lays emphasis on software development and design of software systems. This degree is more software-oriented. On the other hand, a computer science degree is technology centric and focuses on understanding, designing, and developing programs. Compared to software engineering, computer science is a broader field and lends you with the flexibility of a career in various application domains.

I'm thinking of doing computer science next year. :)

Here, in Canada, Software Engineers are engineers and thus graduating from a SE course (I am in one) will allow you to become a Professional Engineer. In my school when you graduate from SE you are fully qualified as a computer scientest as well. In Canada the ISP (yes ISP no not our internet service providers) can accredit Computer Science cources (and does this for both the CS and SE cources in my school), however it does not have the same athority as the engineering board. The average job salary is higher for software engineers than compsci and we do a lot of coding in school (since as I mentioned we fill all the requirments that a CS class does). One huge difference is that SE is designed to be a cross of CS and comp eng, so we touch on some hardware aspects as well. IT (from what I have noticed) can refer to one of three things: usually a collage course, or a non-programming tech related job, or just the industry as a whole.

Hope this helps, also see http://www.softeng.uwaterloo.ca/Prospec ... comparison for more info.

I wonder how my computer engineering degree fits in here... its more or less a cross between computer science and electrical engineering leaning slightly more toward electrical engineering except that I have taken alot of extra CS classes im my case (Data structures and Lisp for example).

I will be able to get my PE in computer engineering here in NC, USA though if I wish to persue a PhD I will have to go for EE or CS since CE only has up to MS at my college.

I thought Computer Eng. is more putting computers together than other stuff, is that a misconception?

P.S. What part of NC are you in? I live in Jackson County.

It is funny how that works (it does tell you on the site I linked to). I will also get my PEng. In Canada Comp Eng is defined as "A cross between computer science and electrical engineering" and soft eng is defined as "A cross between computer engineering and computer science". In a way we software engineers are computer engineers that are more focaused on the software aspect than a regular computer engineer.

Would that be a Canadian Cross then? OHO! THEMS THE GAGS! :D

It's like the diff. between electrical engineering vs electronics vs telecomunication ....
They all share some sort of stuff, but you will end up in diff. places ...
CS, SE and IT means what actually they mean ... with commons and diffs.
take the dictionary and look up for their meanings ... And thats what it is ...

Now, students who gradute CS might actually be interested is SE and IT graduates might be intereseted to work in CS domain ...
Take paper and write : what I what to do for the rest of [my] life?
Then ask teachers from CS,SE,IT what's best for you :)
Best regards

i'm currently enrolled in college and i'm planning to get my associates in software development. i love programming, cant get enough. i know what you mean though, people i know with degrees and an actual programming job seem to hate it too. kind of scares me when i think that i'm going into this field.

i'm 27, i waited way too long to actually get into college!

27 is not too old. I started uni then. And I never touched a computer of any kind until I was 26. Never had the slightest interest in the things when I was young.

[oops typo in age]
