You know your a geek when.....

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

I know most of the options in Linux config, too. It's pretty easy after compiling 30 or so kernels ;)

How about... You know you're a geek when you understand every single joke on a board showing computer jokes at school and nobody else does.

You know you're a geek when you start posting in "you know you're a geek when" threads.

Edit: Threads, not topics. Bleh.

... you've spent most of your childhood in front of a computer, coding stuff nobody gives a damn about
... you want everything in the world to be as easy to understand as the piece of hardware in front of you
... you don't read books
... you keep counting from 1 to 4 every time you do something that takes you away from the computer for a long time
... you get bored without music or video games
... you eat a lot of potato chips
... you've heard it all, seen it all and decided it's really bad out there
... somebody calls you a troll, but you don't give a damn

When your parents take away your input peripherals in an attempt to "cure you," and you plug in your spare mouse when they're asleep and use on-screen keyboards to code. :-P

p.s. True story.

Really? 'Geeks' read books; a lot of books.
zaleschiemilgabriel wrote:... you keep counting from 1 to 4 every time you do something that takes you away from the computer for a long time

No? Maybe learn patience? When I'm on vacation and away from a computer I'm as happy as can be.
zaleschiemilgabriel wrote:... you eat a lot of potato chips
I hate potato chips...and fast foods...In fact, I really only like foods that don't make me feel like crap after eating them. (Hmmm...A nice juicy salad comes to mind.)

All in all, that list isn't particularly 'geeky'. Sorry.
...you secretely get angry when overhearing people on a public bus or train talk about computers when everything they're saying is clearly incorrect.

Seriously, I hate that. Sometimes, I'm just about to walk up to people and correct them. Blasphemers...

I probably should contribute and not just comment about these things, so: "You know you're a geek when you find the term itself distasteful'.

You concern me, being without a computer is the equivalent of losing a limb for most "true" geeks. ;)

As for potato chips and fast food, they're the only "true" food groups... along with pasta, pasta is nice. 8)

Although I can't say I hate them, I prefer decent, healthy food to fast food, crisps etc.

I prefer to relax while I'm on vacation. Sitting around doing nothing. Maybe even going outside to do some pastels or watercolors. Ah, quite the sedative.

Probably the funiest thing I've hear all day, with the exception of 'Overzealous Botanist'.
