Person 2: Really? I didn't know there was a first version in the first place!
Beta when pronounced incorrectly seems more like 'better'... then again, we all know that betas are better because without them we couldn't get free stuff while all the other suckers have to pay for a more stable version ...
Or maybe better is beta ?

I guess that depends on their location and any accompanying accent involved, here beta doesn't sound at all like "better".
It's like "bay-ta".. I only know a few people who say it like "beh-ta".

I know how to say 'beta' (more like 'bayta'), I just thought it might be interesting to point out the obvious confusion less educated people might get.

Over here it's usually "beh-tah" but it's not much of a problem since when we mean "better" it sounds more like "bater" here. Of course, all of that may be related to the fact that we tend to speak Dutch here, not English .
When we speak English it gets pronounced "bay-tah", AFAIK. And pronouncing English words ending in '-er' as ending in '-ah' is pretty strongly discouraged by the educational system (or at least it was by my teachers ).
Perhaps someone from Greece could enlighten us on the proper pronunciation?
beh-tah is about right from what I know. Then again, who knows how the ancient Greek pronounced it?
I do know that better <-> "besser" around here, and I do think that public beta sucks because what you do get is annoyed users who think that a beta should work just fine, and what you don't get is proper beta testing (i.e., trying the 20 instead of using the 80)...

Here in Australia it's neither bay-tuh or better, it's pronounced bee-tuh. I don't think there is a single correct way, because I've heard all 3 in conversation.

Here in Holland it is pronounced like beh-tah. We pronounce it like the ancient Greek probably did. I know this because I have had Ancient Greek lessons. In Greek it is: βητα: spelled as bèta, èta, tau, alpha. In Holland we write bèta, and pronounce the è as a long èh (as in "bEtter", but longer).
By the way the word alphabet was made from the first two letters alpha-bèta of the Greek alphabet
