ok. i bought this dlink thing that is compatable with my computer. i installed it and it locked up my computer and **** but that not important. i formatted my pc and installed what i needed again. i installed the dlink thing and it worked. now, i was installing some virus software. then i tried updating it and something didnt work, so i uninstalled it and reinstalled it. then after installing it, it says to reboot. so i did, but it stalled at a point in rebooting, so i pressed the reset button. now when it boots up, when it shows the win98 screen loading, i hear a beep in my computer which usually means its going to do a scandisk cause my pc didnt shut down properly. however, after the beep, it just locks up. what can i do to fix this?
also it put a line in my autoexec.bat file. maybe it i removed it that would fix it...but how do i remove a line in it from dos, and how do i know which line is it if that would fix it.
Sigh, stupid computer is acting up again. help please with w

Use another computer to download Linux. I prefer Redhat 8.0 right now, because it is a good, stable distribution that has the added advantage of being able to install itself off of a diskette and an internet connection.
Then reinstall your computer with an operating system that can take a beating.
Windows is not particularly robust... it lets itself get broken far too easily and has too many security vulnerabilities.
The company for which I work was inundated with all kinds of reports of one of the games we're marketing causing people's computers to reboot everytime they were powered up. A few days later, we discovered that it wasn't OUR software, it was a goddamned worm these people had caught by opening Re:Wicked Screensaver e-mails.
Stupid, stupid Windows. How I hate you so...

@joey: open a dosbox or go into command line mode.
then type "edit <your_file>" and you'll get an editor with the file already open and you can change it to your needs.
Hope this helps.

thanks. but this computer is fucked. now i went into safe mode, then rebooted without making any changes and it loaded normally again. i think it was having trouble finishing setting up mcafee or something when it booted, but when i went into safe mode it did it, so maybe that was it.
anyway, it works now and thank for the help. sorry andrew, im not getting linux
