New Hardware

Post by Wilco23 »

Hey guys, I'll be purchasing a brand new, flat screen super-fast computer within three months. Only problem is that I've sort of lost touch with hardware and software specs, those digits and numbers don't mean anything to me anymore! (I'm from the 286, 386, 486 era)
Ever since the Pentium was released I've lost touch. I welcome any recommendations as to what type of computer I should be looking at.
In particular what specs, RAM, HDD space, Windows version, Graphics Accelerator etc.
???

Well, I'd get an 8 bejeezus-hertz processor with 400 horsepower and 10 million DDRAM(Which stands for Dance Dance Revolution.... AM)

I asked the salesman for one of those but he said they didn't have them in stock, in fact he said he had no bloody idea what I was gibbering on about. :P

* CPU:
Pentium IV or some AMD processor over 2 GHz.
* RAM:
At least 512 MB, 1 GB would be much better...
* HDD:
At least 100 GB and 7200 rpm (I have 80 GB HDD full all the time)...
* Windows:
It's your decision, if you want games then Windows 98 (or very buggy Me), if you want reliability then Windows XP
* Graphics card:
GeForce 4 Titanium or GeForce FX at least 128 MB (256 MB is better).

Hope that helps you! ;)

This is a system that is just above average, and should play most games and apps.

Processor: 1 GHZ+ P3, P4 or AMD equivilant
RAM: At least 128 megabytes of either RDRAM (if you have P4) or DDR (cheaper than RD, faster than SD.)
HDD: 50 gig minimum, 7200 RPM should serve you well.
Graphics: 32 meg minimum (128 meg is preferred) card from NVIDIA or ATI lines.
Sound: SB Live! or Audigy from Creative.
Windows: either Windows 2000 (more functional) or Windows XP (eye candy) - anything before these versions is inefficent and crash prone.

UBER LEET GAMES MACHINE - you should be prepared to spend alot of money on this puppy, but it will do ANYTHING you want it to.:

Processor: 2 GHZ+ P4 w/hyperthreading
RAM: 1024 megabytes of 1100 MHZ RDRAM
HDD: 120 gig 9600 RPM monster
Graphics: ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Sound: Creative Audigy, with 5.1 surround sound.
Windows: Windows 2000
