Just another XP thing..

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

There are actually no tools with Windows XP, which are meant for editing homepages.

Did you format the hard drive before installing Windows XP??? If you didn't format (or didn't delete and made new partitions), then they should be there (or you can try those anti-delete tools (I once saw one what could restore files even from formatted hard drives, but there was no demo available).

In Windows 2000 i could just open my page source and edit it. In XP i can't do it.

It should (I've got Windows XP not in English) be: right click->Open with->Choose Program.
What do you mean you can't?
PS: I edited my last message, Oliver.

That was what I meant under restoring the data from formatted hard drive. (Of course, when you use FDISK, then there's no possibility you could make Quick Format.)

actually, it is possible to retrieve data from a hard drive that has been formatted, even if it was formatted with a full format. The only 100% reliable way to destroy data for good is to degauss the drive or to destroy the drive.

I wish I could remember where I read it, but an MIT graduate has been buying up old hard drives on eBay... and he's been successful in reconstructing data from the formatted drives, in one case an entire year's data of bank records was recovered from a so-called "formatted" hard drive.

I think it was on Yahoo tech news not too long ago, about a week, week and a half ago.

I didn't find any sources of that information I posted here, therefore - I deleted it. :P

I wish I knew how to do that. I could make some big cash with that :P

Tell me more about this making floppies 2 times bigger thingy. I always end up with 2MB files and then I have to zip 'em and unzip 'em and I'm just too lazy for that.

it has to do with residual magnetic properties of the disk. Simply "deleting" a file doesn't really delete it, because the file is just deallocated and not actually erased (erasing takes longer). Even if a file is erased, the magnetic properties of the disk can somehow be examined and the data recovered (I don't really have any idea how it's done, so I don't know how reliable the data recovery is or how easy it is to do). There are ways to make it more difficult to do recover an erased file, but as I said if you really want to securely delete something you have to either degauss the disk or destroy it.

lmao. This is Impossible, if a Partion or the Entire Hard-Disk Gets Formatted Properly (Every Byte Gets Erased), there is no way the data can be Retrieved.

On the other hand, it can be retrieved if the Hard-Disk was not formatted properly, if any of you'se have formatted a Hard-Drive then you'll know that you usally get two options: Quick-Format/Secure-Erase -- All Quick Format does is remove the Presence of a Partion from the Partion-Table, in this case the data can be Retrieved! Secure-Erase on the other hand Removes the Partion's Presence from the Partion-Table and Clears Every Sigle Byte of the Area you wish to format -- This takes longer, but it prevents Recovery of Data!
Actually, it is not possible to truly delete every possible bit of data on a harddrive without physically destroying it. The intelligence agencies have some "methods" which I will not disclose here for restoring deleted data.

all a quick format does is zero the entries in the fat tables, not altering any data.
