Actually, this is old news. Slashdot ran a story about people using hacks like this on P2P networks. The story mainly dealt with newer ways to STOP this kind of activity, because it ultimately slows down the networks.

As in *nix and MAC OS, try to be "nice".

Go with the "Lite"st version of Kazaa you can get. The full version is spyware.

Kazaa Lite still gives annoying popups when it's running for a certain amount of time. You'll get an IE window that doesn't close in the first minute and calls other windows as well. Most of the time, the speed's terrible too.

Okay, then switch to Linux and run a plain-text gnutella client. Or switch to Mac and go with LimeWire. There are even quite a few Win alternatives to Kazaa.

No, smartguy, I am not kidding. There are many different peer to peer applications as well as many different standards. Your likelihood of any of them having what you're looking for is about the same on any of them. I prefer the Linux gnutella clients, because they are very plain (Sorry, that should've been a plain-GUI with text interface) and aren't all Spyware-y.
