My ISP, Verizon, gives me a dynamic IP, but from my experience, it doesn't always change when I restart my modem, and it seems to stay the same when I leave my modem running. So, Joey, you could have a pirate site that travelled the murky seas of data, posting your newest IP on the mb for other salty C dogs and Perl divers.

ok so i set up my server. to have a site off my pc for FREE, the site name has to be my ip right? if i wanted one like joey.com it would cost me right? well who is making it cost? thats what i dont get. who is charging me and how can they if its MY server.

If you want a domain name on the cheap, get some free web space (which you already have), then go to www.cjb.net and register a domain there. You'll get a pop-up ad, but that's about it. Then, redirect or link from your free web page to your computer's IP.

The cost comes from registering domain names. I'm not sure how this cost comes about, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Yes, your server is free but, your IP address is not "joey.com". What you are paying for is making your IP address appear as joey.com.

I hope that explains it a little bit better. You are using a nameserver whenever you type a url into your web browser. That nameserver directs your browser to the correct location. Someone has to pay for that service. Which is why you have to pay to register a domain name.A nameserver is a computer with the software and the data required to translate domain names into the required Internet Protocol (IP) numbers so that people can find your site using a Web browser.

LOL! Wow. I cut and pasted that from somewhere...I forget where...that's sad. Yes, it is Internet Proxy. Internet Protocol refers to the IP in TCP/IP not a IP address.

Oh, in answer to your question...I highly doubt it. You can get those www.cjb.yourname.com sites but, they put banners up and stuff. It's only $10.00 to $15.00 a year for a domain name though...check out
