Nintendo Kills Gameboy

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

To play gameboy games on pc (or mac) I should find the right roms on the net and it's illegal to do this.

I've never been all that clear on the whole emulator/rom thing. If you own the original console and cartridge then it is legal, right? But, isn't it illegal to reverse engineer either one of them? Is the loop-hole-legal thing just as much of a crock as the abandonware thing?

Anyway. I still have my B/W gameboy. I love that thing. Tetris and Zelda are still my favorite games on it. They also just so happen to be the only games where that moving screen/sprites thing doesn't happen. Super Wario is really cool, but that screen thing happens a lot.

Hey, I have a super nintendo...now I know there is a converter to play 8 bit nintendo games on your super nintendo. I also know that there is a converter to play gameboy games on the 8 bit nintendo....Could I play gameboy games on my super nintendo? Hmmmm....me feels a gameboy revival coming on!

teehee...

There are programs out there that you can put into a ROM along with an original NES or gameboy ROM that will allow you to play them on a GBA.

Actually, (Speaking of ROMS), it is perfectly legal to use a Rom if you own the original cart. You are really only paying for the software. Emulators have a pretty easy time without getting sued or anything like that.

I would say, screw Nintendo and download all the NES and SNES games, except that they are rereleasing most of the popular titles for those consoles on the GBa, often with enhancements. So, I give Nintendo all my love.

As far as "abandonware" goes, as far as www.the-underdogs.org is concerned, most of the companies who released those titles no longer exist. A lot of those titles were designated freeware by their original authors (As in games like 3 by Three and Fool's Errand). Plus, the way that copyright law is enforced in the US, the company has to claim suit against the infringing party. This can be either a cease-and-desist order or a suit for monetary damages.

I should point out, though, that in the case of some really good games that our corporate chain megastores will NOT carry, I would rather they be stolen and live on for future generations than merely fade away into so many dissociated electrons.
