HATE MICROSOFT?

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

for the record, I'm using IE6 and it opens just fine. QuickTime, on the other hand, is one of the biggest pieces of crap ever to see the light of day.

Well, unless you're suggesting that Microsoft was being very "sneaky" and put some code into Windows that would make applications whose titlebar reads "QuickTime" suck, then I don't really see the point you're making. It's hardly Microsoft's fault if Apple can't make a good movie player for Windows. Even RealPlayer is better than QuickTime, and RealPlayer ain't anything special.

Eero, I can't speak for anyone else, but I've got IE6 Service Pack 1 and the movie downloaded and played for me without any problems. The problem is probably not IE6, however. It's more likely the QuickTime plugin that is to blame.

no need to hate operating systems nor companies that create them.

My w2k box crashes very often in the last months, but this is, because i can't let the fingers off the registry or because I try some very near program. Last time i got some nice dll installed by IE, which I had to remove manually afterwards from registry and systemtree .. but that is my fault, no blame on IE. One can disable those scripting facilities in IE before surfing in the dark side of internet. ;) Also it crashed, because i changed motherboard and processor recently and did not yet reinstall the os so that the new board gets recognised correctly.

So, all in all: Not to blame operating systems is best. I like windows, and i like linux. I have three linux boxes and two windows boxes at home and one mac and one solaris/sparc-box.

I live in a heterogenic environment.

One word at last: one of you wanted a computer booting in an instant: go and get the commodore c64 . This is one of the best pieces of computer, ts hardware guys ever made.

thats it.

Ah, the voice of reason!!! (Although I have a Vic-20 instead of a C-64)

I recently got rid of my Windows installation because I decided not to have any stolen items on my computer. I got the machine off of a friend who was into warez and stuff, so I dumped everything... even the OS was pirate soft. Now, I have a nice, legal computer running nice, legal Linux.

Well, Joel, Quicktime actually did work pretty well on my win98SE setup, although I never tried it on any other Windows. Any other reason that QuickTime doesn't work very well for you may have to do with your particular version of Windows or perhaps the fact that Quicktime was developed for the Mac which is a completely different... everything..... from a PC. The hardware, OS, and even the filesystem are all completely different One thing that really irritates me is that QuickTime isn't available natively for Linux.

And I really hate Real Player, Quicktime just has a single bar with an absolute minimum of buttons... elegant.

QuickTime plays fine on my Win98SE, too, most of the time. I just find it to be irritating to use and to have more problems than the others do. (RealPlayer used to be intolerably unstable, but since RealOne player came out I haven't had any problems with it at all, although my movie player of choice remains Windows Media Player 6.4).

For the record, I have no particular love of Microsoft. I think some of the things they do are despicable (e.g., preventing the .NET Platform SDK from instalilng on Win98 and saying that the .NET Platform SDK can't run on Win98 when, in fact, it can). I also don't think all their software is wonderful. Like I said, I use Windows Media Player 6.4 and not 7, because I don't like 7. I hate Microsoft Word with a passion. I'll take WordPerfect over it any day.

But as far as OS's go, I've found Windows to suit me just fine.
