Listening to music while OS devving

Post by BMW »

Does anyone else listen to music when OS devving? I do sometimes.

If so, what are some good songs that you listen to?

I mainly listen to these Finnish bands (whether doing OS Dev or not):

Stam1na - Lääke

Kotiteollisuus - Raskaat veet

Viikate - Ei enkeleitä

Especially the first one is my favorite band but the last one is more suitable for the OS Dev. Previously, when I did play instruments more actively I listened to songs that I was going to play (with or without the band). Nowadays I can enjoy music much more because it is not a "technical thing" anymore. I mean, I used to learn the structure of a song while listening and it also usually meant that I concentrated on listening to one specific thing at a time, like a guitar track, bass track etc.

Ha! Good Estonian songs...

Kuldne Trio - Laip on Laip

Normally I'm listening to metal, but recently my mind got so messed up that I was listening to a mixture of Estonian punk songs, Russian / Soviet marches and classical requiems by Verdi, Brahms and Mozart.

I really like these ones - I guess I will explore their other songs as well :)
Do you have the lyrics to this one? I could not find them on the web and understanding Estonian is still a bit difficult for me, I'm learning it for only half a year :P

Oh my god... Thanks for the warning ;)

Some more metal for coding:

I tend to prefer long pieces of music so I can just get cranking away and not be bothered by repeated thematic changes. After all, it should promote work efficiency, not distract from it.

My extremes would roughly be around Canto Ostinato and the Chireiden Set, both of which come around quite frequently. Oh, and make sure you turn down the volume in between if you listen to them in that order

This was the first hit for me, seems legit.

Estonian language sounds very funny to me. It is because it sounds so Finnish and shares vast amount of words with little modification. Yet it is so different that I cannot understand it.

To my German ears both Estonian and Finnish sounds very cryptic ;) Now at least I understand most words when listening to Estonian, and can reconstruct parts of many sentences. Listening to Estonian music is also a good way to practice. But I don't understand a single word when listening to Finnish music ;)

Generally it's some sort of progressive rock or metal for me. Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Yes, and going more modern such as Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater.

The off the shelf stereotype of a programmer is that they listen to their melodic metal music, this place doesn't seem to be exception. It's like that where I work as well where programmers listen to their melodic metal without any exception.

I must be the exception here, but the question is why they all listen to this melodic metal music.
