Open Source Social Networking?

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Open Source Social Networking?

Post by CWood »

Does anybody know of a social networking site (similar to Google+ or *shudder* Facebook), that is entirely, 100% open source? Or, is there anyone that would consider making one (would that I could, but my web host is VERY specific about chat scripts  , but having said that, I would be very happy to help out where I could.)

Wikipedia/Wikimedia?

It's a social networking site:
  • Loads of users
  • Your have your own personal page
    • You can style it any way you like!
    • You can even have as many sub pages as you'd like!
    • Other users can post on it!
  • You can leave messages for other users
  • You can upload your photos and videos
  • You can meet people and organise your friend list however you like

MessiahAndrw very interesting point! Never looked at it that way before, but I kinda guess you're right (and its probably a lot safer to use than most social networking sites nowadays as well).

Not sure how far they got. What I do recall is that the project started on kickstarter.com and got lots of publicity, and IIRC one of the founders killed himself when the pressure to deliver got to much. Probably not the entire story, but interesting anyhow.

Yet another site banned in China. Someone is going to have to shell out the cash for the servers too. Diaspora seems to have come some way and is probably better than many newer proprietary small social networks as it integrates Facebook and Twitter.
Get back to work!

Actually, I'm actually working on a project like this called Developer.
It's actually a part of the IDE I'm creating, in which people share code and ideas while coding. The problem is making it cross platform and web accessible.

As far as the server issue goes, could we not do a community donations funding, or have a 'premium' service (ad free or whatever), for those who want it, without spoiling the FOSS label?

There's also identi.ca and the software it is based on called status.net, which are a free replacement for twitter. It's fairly trivial to set up (unlike Diaspora) but it really hasn't hit critical mass yet.
