Wiki for Hobby Operating Systems

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Wiki for Hobby Operating Systems

Post by GAT »

Does anyone else think it would be a good idea to do a wiki where OS developers could make a page for their OS? I don't mean like just a list, but a full wiki page for each operating system.

You could:
  • Write about your operating system on your wiki user page. A lot of members do this.
  • Register a domain name and have your own project site.
  • Register your project at QuokForge and play with the awesome wiki and project management features there.
Just some ideas.

Fourth option: set up a free blog on blogger or such and write all about your os :-)

Github and Sourceforge gives you the ability to create a wiki for your project in addition to free public repo's and in the case of Sourceforge, filehosting.

I dont mean just for me to talk about my OS, but where any os devlopr could write an article about their OS. There are lists of hobby OSs on the web that link to other sites describing the OSs, the idea here is to have one place that would describe a lot hobby operating systems

Why not create a sticky thread for people to describe their OS in and unstick it once a year so that it can be replaced with a new one? That would clear all the abandoned ones out of the way so that no one needs to bother reading about dead projects, while those which are still on the go can be reposted to the new thread by the people behind those projects.

To be allowed in the list an OS would have to meet some kind of standard so that it isn't flooded with things that can only print a few messages to the screen, so a list of possible means to qualify would need to be drawn up, or maybe it could be done by invitation only. That would allow everyone to read up on who's doing what really easily, and people could edit the entry on their OS as often as they like to keep it up to date. Often when you look up someone's project at their own site you still don't have a clue what it's about afterwards, so this would motivate everyone to think about how they might present things better.
