Whats your workstation look like?

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Whats your workstation look like?

Post by VolTeK »

(ill remove this as soon as i find a copy of the same thread on the forums, if you find this thread to be bad please comment or pm me before anyone can reply so i may remove it)

However, since i have not found a duplicate topic yet, i figured id ask an interesting question (in my opinion and maybe others).

What does your workstation look like? It can be anywhere you do a sort of programming (job, hobby, or both!)

Don't mind showing the donuts left on the desk since the day before because you were too busy buried in your code to even mind it, maybe even introduce the animal that keeps you company sitting on top of the desk or blocking your monitor.

Ill post mine when i can find my camera, please keep images at a minimal size to keep in mind anyone who does not have amazing internet speeds.

What does the place your program comes to life, look like?

I could make a picture of my desk, but actually most of my work is done elsewhere - in the living room, in a hotel room, in the garden, wherever I have the time and opportunity to set up my laptop.

I very seldom actually work at my desk. It's mostly the place where the external USB drives reside...

As I understand it when you go up from the bed you have a 30cm distance to work.

But hey, at least he can keep working when he's sitting on the toilet.

I was referring to that large blue bed in front of his desk.

And I meant that since he has a laptop,he can work everywhere. Even when he's on the toilet.

Admit it, everyone that has a laptop takes it to the bathroom with them sometimes...

Looking into a 10.2" tablet for reading and maybe osdev (if there is anyway to emulate x86 or windows 7 on android)

Always wanted one, dont do as much as laptops do but it fits what i need.

In the pic you can see my partner (to the right) resting under the tv

Erm... no!?!?

Aside from it being disgusting... My laptop is a somewhat aged Acer TravelMate 4670. (Core Duo, the last of the 32bit breed.)

One, these thingies become hot when given stuff to crunch, to the point of being highly uncomfortable on your lap. I never use mine without a Bräda (which I can recommend without reproach).

Two, the batteries have died long ago, so I need constant AC supply. When I use the lappy in the garden, there's a cable drum sitting under my chair. 8)

A newer laptop is scheduled for "as soon as my funds get better". Right now we're still working on reducing the overdraft from the house rennovation three years ago...

I'll add that my MacBook too gets painful whenever I run a substantial "make -j4" (or run anything 3D). This happens more so when on wall power than when on battery; I presume the CPU must be throttled back somewhat on battery.

I tried the Laptop/Monitor idea but i could never get use to it, never knew why honestly. I had desktop by desktop before but ended up neglecting the one desktop. I went through selling 2 desktops because of this (thought it was cool, sold it, got another and missed the feeling, sold it) so..

I just got another monitor, and then another, and had 3. Then removed the 1 monitor, then the other, and stayed with 1 (the sound system would not fit with 2) and i really like it, i love music.

Allot of the time I just use my laptops monitor, but having a second one there is great when I'm coding, docs on one, and code/terminal on another, of course being a laptop it doesn't always sit in my room, in the morning I like to sit in the kitchen and sip my coffee while on my machine :D

I couldn't live without three monitors now. Firefox almost permanently in the middle one, Email and IM usually in the right one. IDE and/or remote desktop and/or SSH usually live in the left-hand screen.

Here's mine: http://jackscott.id.au/wp-content/uploa ... AG0021.jpg
