50 facts and myths about Linux or why Linux has no future

Post by Luca »

StopLinux project has completed translating its famous "<deleted. Get back to your lair>" document into English. Since its initial release, the document has been heavily updated and abridged. Thus, all particular examples have been removed from it, while leaving general concepts only.

Despite some controversial points, author of this document believes to have shattered the myths about open source software, particularly Linux.

P.S. I am author! OSDev4ever!

P.P.S. If anybody could help me and repost this to another forums I will be very pleased!

Just skimmed the article. Genuine flamebait, lots of FUD. I vote for deleting the thread outright.

(Take note that I flame Linux myself on occassion, but Luca's link points to a lengthy diatribe not based in any facts whatsoever.)

@ Luca:

You might want to take note that we are a community consisting of Windows, Linux, BSD, and Mac users, who get along quite nicely without bashing each other's choice of operating system. Your attempts at Linux bashing (2 posts out of 2 you made so far) are grossly misplaced here. If you don't like Linux, don't use it, but don't embarass yourself further by your inane attempts of spreading FUD.

Had a look at the "50 facts and myths". Flame bait definitely. What did poor Linus do to upset this guy so much?

Solar's got my vote.

Wow, that is the most atrocious article I have ever had the misfortune to skim read. The title is a misnomer: hardly of those 50 "facts" or "myths" are commonly held beliefs, they're all just staging points for you to rant without quoting sources.

"But I have citations!"

15, total. In an article with 50 points to make, all of which highly opinionated. 3 of which are from "stoplinux.org", and 2 from "linuxhaters.blogspot.com". Highly impartial.

I'm absolutely not suggesting that Linux is the be-all-and-end-all of operating systems. But that article is just plain lies, half of it, and links to it will not be tolerated on this forum.

Hey! Why did you delete link?!

Where did you find FUD? I posted proof link for all major mentions in text!

>3 of which are from "stoplinux.org.ru".
Did you looked of what kind of links it was? You want to say that I wrote fake-reviews of Linux distribs??!

>and links to it will not be tolerated on this forum
Oh f*cken tolersts! Linux as dead man. About it talks or good or nothing? You talk about it as I offended the religious feelings of believers. Perfect!

Where did you find lies?! Just interesting...

I didn't expected so negative reaction from this site....

As I said, I flame Linux (and Windows) myself on occassion, but I use both daily, and my flames come from actual experience. Yours merely show a lack of that experience.

Just one example: In your section "why console sucks and GUI is so much better", the line you provide as an example as to how cryptic and difficult console commands are is like nothing I have ever seen in the wild:

Code: Select all

bzip -cd foo.tar.bz2 | tar -xvf
An intern who'd write such a line while I was looking would get a stern talking-to from me on the benefits of actually reading the manuals of the tools you are using, and the KISS concept. Consider:

Code: Select all

tar xjvf foo.tar.bz2
tar --extract --bzip2 --verbose --file=foo.tar.bz2
Both lines equivalent to your artificially twisted example, and much simpler. I won't even get much into the rest of that paragraph. Just one thing to make you think: it's quite hard to make e.g. a time-triggered script click an "Unpack" button...

Linux does have some disadvantages, none of which I could find in your list because it takes experience and understanding to locate them, whereas your list is merely xenophobic.

Oh, and spamming virtually every Linux forum you could find with your Anti-Linux flames doesn't add credibility to your cause either. You want a shitstorm? You'll just get quiet disgust from us here.

May I remind you that irrespective of fact or opinion, comparative studies of OSes are explicitly forbidden by forum rules. That includes all versions of reality.

Troll +1, Delete +1. None of this serves any enlightenment or progress to the forum.

Do you understand that's is on of the most simplest example? What is harder to push one button "compress" or type 50 letters?

From us, or personally from you?

>and spamming virtually every Linux forum
Do you have others ideas how inform people that there is projects, that blame Linux?

*sigh*

Tab completion of filenames? Right-click on the filename in Konqueror / Nautilus to select the "Extract..." submenu?

Are we really playing petty one-upmanship on such details here? Don't try, you will lose.

Unless Combuster loses his temper, from us. 8)

Have you considered the possibility that users of {insert-OS-of-choice} around the world are well aware that there are {insert-OS-of-choice} haters out there, but are not interested in their flames, even galled when they're pushed into their faces like they were a bunch of kids needing some kind of education?

Put your link into your signature if you want (using civil, non-offensive wording, mind you(*)). But please stop the evangelizing.

@Luca: Here is how it goes.

I currently have freedom of choice, If I want to use Linux I am going to use it, no quarter man wanabe troll is going to stop me from using it. Currently I love linux. But I won't diss windows users, and I wont dis Mac users.
Luca wrote:Oh f*cken tolersts! Linux as dead man. About it talks or good or nothing? You talk about it as I offended the religious feelings of believers. Perfect!
You did, You offended me because dis my freedom of freedom in choice, and you wish to dictate to me, what OS I should use on MY own computer, in my own house!

No, Instead I have a completely different idea, stop wasting your time. Besides who blames them? MS Windows? Just because they lost 1% of there market share. I have yet to see one software project that complanes that there project is being destroyed by linux. I guess that an OSDever could complain, but it would make no sense. I mean if linux didn't egsist then windows or mac would be there any way.
