Any idea on this application's name?

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Any idea on this application's name?

Post by xDDunce »

Hey guys, long time no see.

I was wondering if anybody could identify an application for me. I remember using it a year or so ago, but I forgot the name of it.

IIRC, the application was a kind of client hosted interweb. The application would tie into the "cloud", which was a network of all users logged on to this application. The network hosted a variety of websites and files which, upon viewing them, you would then become a short term host for the files for everyone else to view. All connections were encrypted, achieving the primary goal of application.

I remember the philosophy behind the creation of the application was to stop prying eyes seeing everything you are doing, i.e. to encrypt all data being transferred.

The reason I came across it in the first place, was that one of my computing teachers came across it while we were studying public-key encryption. Neither of us could remember the name of the program.

Not sure if that's at all helpful to anyone who knows the program, but it's as much as I can remember right now.

Thanks for reading!
Duncey.

It's not what you're looking for, but Tor might also be something interesting to look at considering you and your teacher's study. You don't become a short term host for the content by using the network (although you can become an endpoint), but the premise is similar: stop prying eyes.

Actually, Tor is what led me to Freenet originally, as I recall; about two years ago or something like that.

Thank you so much guys! It was Freenet. Although, Tor does look like an interesting project. Looks like I got some nice reading for the next few weeks

Thanks for all the help guys,
Duncey.
