radio station?

Post by Sam111 »

I was wondering if their is a site on the internet where you could listen to the equivalent stations that are playing on a radio at your place.

I know that different locations of the world have different songs playing for rock 102 but I would like to go to a site that allows me to listen to the exact same songs/stations that my radio/boom box would be recieveing.

Does anybody know if their is a site like that out their????

Also it would be nice if their was a site to listen to the local police and other things you could recevie from a scanner.
Obviously I would want this to be the same as what my scanner would be recieveing so the website would have to stream it based on your location?

Wondering if these sites are out their???

Would be nice since then I wouldn't have to by a scanner....

Thanks

The only way an Internet radio receiver (these do exist) could pick up exactly what you would pick up would be if they were in exactly the same location as you are. Which (if they existed) you would probably be noticing outside your window right now.

The nearest approximation would be to find a list of radio stations in your area (here is the one for where I live) and then visit the station's website and stream it from them.

As for the police scanner... since you're not supposed to listen to those stations, and they are technically in restricted bandwidth (at least here they are) the probability of finding them streamed over the Internet is virtually nil.

Yes, of course there is such a site. RadioWhere It's really quite amazing to how it works. See, normally this would be impossible, but by using satellites to magnify the eddy currents in the atmosphere, it is possible to change the polarity of a small area on a magnetic disk. These satellites detect these flipped bits and can correspond them to anywhere in the world. So you can see what's on the radio in Africa or Antartica. It's a very neat project.

Heh, I didn't actually think it was possible, and I don't think it is unless you live in huge cities..

What? nobody's heard of SHOUTcast? I'm not ever particularly fond of music.. and I've heard of it.. they've been around since 1999.

Old look: http://classic.shoutcast.com/
New look: http://www.shoutcast.com/

You can use practically any player you want, so long as it supports streaming MP3/AAC over HTTP.

If you live in the US, http://www.thestreamcenter.com/ might be what you're looking for. It lists the websites of radio stations and provides a link to their Flash and/or Windows Media Player player.

There are also quite a few SDR (software defined radio) based websites that will display a waterfall for the range of frequencies that their hardware can handle. This will frequently include bands that you're not necessarily permitted to listen to, much less transmit to, such as areas of bandwidth used by emergency services, AirBand, etc. I'll see if I can dig up a link or two later.
