Offline Copy of OS Dev Site (Not Forums)
Offline Copy of OS Dev Site (Not Forums)
Any one think it a cool idea to supply an entire-site offline-archive of OS Dev? OS Dev could charge for CDs.

Seems a little random, but this is a great idea, IMO. We could even provide tutorial tarballs from willing authors.
At one point, I used to take notes and walk across town to the library once a week to look up what I needed, downloading any source or pages to a flash drive, and I could see the situation arising again.
I don't know if anyone would be willing to do the CDs, but maybe just a nightly/weekly tarball of the wiki?
EDIT: Shouldn't this be in the "OSDev Wiki" section?

I hate forums and well I don't use them much at all. So...I dunno where this post belongs. It was RANT and General RAMBLINGS so I didn't think it belonged since it isn't asking for help etc.

Valid points, friend. I wasn't meaning to attack you, the edit was meant as an aside for mods if this topic takes off beyond just we two.

Oh its quite alright. I knew it was meant well. I wonder...you a serious OS Dev? I've been writing my OS in Assembly. Got as far as:
- 32-Bit Protected Mode
- GDT, IDT, PIC Mapped
- No Paging Yet
- Theoretically (paper...) designed a filesystem

Thank you, exactly what I was hoping for. There should be a link to this from the wiki, IMO, but I'm not sure where to put it.
Re: Offline Copy of OS Dev Site (Not Forums)
Hell, front page it. Thank you VERY much!!!

I'm sure that what you want is here: http://files.osdev.org/osdev_wiki.zip
Re: Offline Copy of OS Dev Site (Not Forums)
Yeah I downloaded it. Paging should be on the Expanded View page, my opinion.

The whole point of a wiki is that people constantly correct the content and add new articles. The wiki itself doesn't contain much useful information anyway because once you get past a certain point you know how to do your own research.

I understand that but all this is good read for those starting out and can be an offline source for quick reference.

Yes, but sometimes you want to take a couple of those pages and study them at your leisure. Some enjoy online connections everywhere we go, some don't, and downloading it to your pad or whatever sure beats hardcopy.Love4Boobies wrote:The whole point of a wiki is...
I didn't know about files.osdev.org either. Good resource!
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

I'm going to put this on my mobile to go with my rss feed of the forums. It will be like the hitchiker's guide to OSdev.
