New Google homepage

Post by NickJohnson »

Has anyone used Google today? The front page now has a loadable background image, and apparently, the only way to eliminate that sidebar has just been eliminated. I personally think it totally upends the whole Google minimalist image, along with making the front page actually laggy for the first time ever, but what do you guys think?

The best thing I have found is to disable JavaScript altogether, which stops the background loading but leaves everything else the same; it does break a lot of other sites, however.

I mean the standard main page, of course. The Firefox and mobile pages seem unaffected.

I've seen several people talking about it, but haven't seen any changes to my local google home page yet (google.tt, where TT stands for Trinidad and Tobago). As with, I imagine, every other localizes google home page, they offer a link to google.com such that localization is turned off. I used that link, and saw no difference. Maybe they've disabled the feature?

I don't get why Google must add something weird like that front page thing and side bar. If they let user disable the side bar and don't touch www.google.fi/bsd I'm happy.

I'm used to going straight to the correct url instead of going through front page. In fact I rarely anymore use front page of Google, I just type "g <phrase>" and my beloved Opera does its magic.

I never use the Google homepage either. I don't even have a Google account. I just use either Firefox's awesomebar or the search box in the top-right.

Yep, I saw this too. When the background image is there it makes the text on the homepage almost unreadable. I just logged back out of my google account, then cleared my history. I now always have a regular google homepage. No need to disable JavaScript.

It seems that the default background being a piece of art was only a 24-hour feature; you can now turn the whole background thing on and off.

Probably a promotion stunt.

I'll go back to pressing Win+D to get a nice view
