Education In Weapons Technology [Career Path]

Post by redoktober »

A couple of days back, I happened to come across an old acquaintance, who was with me in high school.
He's just about to finish school.
Back then, he was one big trouble-maker. Worse than me.
And now...he's like, a guy who's getting 2100 in his SAT, acceptance letters from Stanford et al.
I really don't know how much of this is true. And I really don't care.
But he mentioned something that clinched my interest.
Something about an American university offering an MS in Weapons Technology.

Now, I'd love to do that!
But I'm currently pursuing a Bachelor's in Computing Systems, from EIT New Zealand.
And I guess pursuing that MS would mean having a BS in Electrical Engineering or the like.
How do I find out more?
Google isn't being very helpful this time.

>Is it neccessary to have a degree in an engineering discipline?
>If yes, is it possible for me to do a second BS, that too in Electrical Engineering?
>If yes, then is there some kind of age limit, some age till when I should enroll for the BS?

Also, later in life, I'd like to go in for an MS in Military Science from the Virginia Military Institute.
Maybe...even a MA in International Relations!
Again, is it necessary to have a BS with a military major? And a BA in International Studies?

Thanks!
:)

Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

Wait, so you're living in India, getting a bachelor's degree in New Zealand for computer science, and yet hoping instead to study military science in the US... that sounds like the strangest education path I can think of. Where exactly are you planning to go from there?

Switzerland to study Yodeling techniques, obviously.

The topic title was misleading; stop using acronyms.. you're going to cause someone to have heart problems.

You could just join a military, score well on your tests, and don't give in until you get a career in weapon technology. I was considering joining the USAF as a nuclear weapons apprentice, but I've changed my direction towards computer/network security in the USAF. It seems that your end goal is right in the centre of the military's agenda?

If not, then I'd suggest double majoring in CS and EE, then once you have enough credits in both of those paths you can pursue a graduate degree in something more specific like weapon technology.

okay.
my bad. i wasn't clear enough.

my institute in delhi has something called a twinning agreement, with many universities across the globe.
under this, we complete 4-6 semesters in india, and the rest in the university abroad.
when we graduate, we graduate with a degree from the foreign university.
so i'm supposed to go to NZ next july.

eh...why so??

i'm afraid that option is no longer open to me. my health is not good enough for a military career.
and...no. my end goal isn't exactly the military. it's iron man!
:P
okay, what i really meant was, i've always liked weapons. and it would be uber-cool to make and design new ones.

again, that may not be possible. i only have a year of study left for my degree, and i really don't want to spend more time. but yeah....i'm sure i could do a second BS, right? in EE? 'cause right now, i'm cash-strapped. a little work experience may be a good idea, and i could then use that pay to fund the second BS..

what do you say???

@redoktober: I don't know specifically how it works in India, but in the states weapons design is done by defense contracting companies. I'd imagine you might also want a good understanding of chemical or mechanical engineering as well. I know some universities in the US allow double majors, I'm sure there's similar options in other nations but you'd have to check for specifics at the individual institution. Likewise VMI specifically is a military college that might have certain specific admission requirements. I know they have the ratline, so you might want to check if your health issues could potentially be a problem.
