Discovery Freelancer - Does anyone play?

Post by Troy Martin »

Hi folks,

I've been spending the last three days playing Discovery Freelancer, which is a mod for the ultimate space shooter/trading/you name it game. Discovery has a multiplayer component as well, though when it comes to factions, ID, and capital ships, it can get quite... interesting.

I'd like to know if anyone here plays on the official (200 player cap) server, since I play on it a LOT and it would be cool to meet some of the OSDev.org gang online there!

My characters are "Kazinsal", a Liberty Navy bomber pilot, and "Selaeda.Kazinsal", a Universal Shipping trader, for those who want to meet me online.

Cheers,
--Troy

never heard of Discovery Freelancer or Freelance itself(in a game context) so.. no..

I'm really confused. What exactly is this? A game that works off what? I'm so confused..

I think I played Freelancer a long time ago, but lately I have been playing X3 Terran Conflict which is very similar. I wish X3 Terran Conflict had online play. I am glad that you posted that since I never knew about it.

Freelancer is a space shooter/simulation/trading game. Takes place in the future. In space. It's fun. You can pretty much do whatever the hell you want, but there are police. And naval forces. So beware...

Freelancer's good, but not perfect. I played Discovery, got sick of it fast. Flying cruisers is fun for the first 30 minutes or so, until you realise that flying such a big ship is downright frustrating rather than enjoyable :( . I had enough fun getting stuck in trade lanes (or worse, watching AI ships get stuck, which clogged up a jump gate for an hour).

Freelancer could do with a dynamic economy and missions, IMO, to liven up the non-campaign game a bit.

Discovery now has it kind of harsh on those of us who like flying capships. Inertia is a real pain (yes, Freelancer's "no inertia" physics start to painfully degrade in bigger ships) and it gets tedious grinding the trade routes to make that 300 million credits you need for a battlecruiser. Grinding rep for IDs and IFFs is also a major pain.

Oh, and there's a newer MASSIVE kind of ship: The Assault Carrier. It's like a city in space. With loads of guns!

I think at one point someone was working on a mod to do that, though it failed. I think the latest Discovery does, however, scale missions according to both your abilities and your group.
