Re: Wich linux should I use?
Depends on what you expect from your Linux, which desktop you prefer, how much you know about Linux, which Linux is used by your friend next door who might come over to help you....
It's like asking, "which game should I buy: Half Life, Madden NFL or Command & Conquer?", to which there is no correct answer.
What made you limit your choices to those you mentioned? Perhaps that gives us a chance to help you further.

Re: Wich linux should I use?
If you have the bandwidth available, most GNU/Linux distributions these days have live CDs available. It might be worth trying a few of those, for instance, trying Gnome against KDE, different pieces of software and how they perform.
Also take into account the size of the support base: For Fedora and Debian/Ubuntu, it's absolutely huge (and for Gentoo and Slackware, a bit smaller). Almost every common configuration for every piece of software on the system has a tutorial. Sticking to the larger distros has a benefit here. Like Solar said, what the guy next door uses is important too: it's why I use Debian.

Try Linux named "Windows XP"
Re: Wich linux should I use?
I'm using Ubuntu Right now... But Is It a good Idea to say try fedora, I have used KDE in the past, I loved, but it crashed out
to much and became unresponsive earlier. What would be my best bet.

Re: Wich linux should I use?
I swear by SuSE because I have never had trouble with it and Ive tried a few distros, but it has been the only one that setup itself up correctly on my laptop. I use gnome just because it looks nicer, but I dont know the difference between it and KDE
Re: Wich linux should I use?
Is Suse A good one? Do you think it will support my anthros Wifi driver? because thats what I'm REALLY looking for.

Hi,
I would recommend Windows if you want all your hardware devices to be detected correctly and running without much trouble . Suse is not good at all . I would recommend Slackware Linux .

Up until a few months ago I struggled with windows, slow, heavy, and blue screens. If you suggest slackware I will look into it.

Re: Wich linux should I use?
That's not an issue of this distribution or another. You can go to the driver homepage, grab the source, and install it yourself if it doesn't work.Coddy wrote:Is Suse A good one? Do you think it will support my anthros Wifi driver?
One of the central things in a distro, for me, is how well it handles package management, how good the user community is in helping out with problems, and how far its setup deviates from the standard (i.e., if a manpage or website says, "edit file xyz", how big are my chances that this distro does it differently).
On that scale, SuSE is about as bad as it could get.
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.

Hi,
or "no benifit" to make games running under linux, except id software it has some version of DEMO games for linux like Quake III Arena, in addition there is a wonderful WINe layer to run large number of window$ programs, but i think this layer work a lil bit slower than running games in window$.
so in this case i prefer window$ to run all games perfectly
this distro Based on Slackware ,& the only things i use this distro is light weight,(you can run full system from USB Flash),and the modular approach gives you the ability to include any other software in Slax easily.
finally, i suggest in most cases linux for one reason "stable"

That's right, but unfortunately most games developers don't likeSolar wrote: It's like asking, "which game should I buy: Half Life, Madden NFL or Command & Conquer?", to which there is no correct answer.

well, i'm using SLAX linux 6.0.9 (your pocket operating system),JackScott wrote: Fedora and Debian/Ubuntu, it's absolutely huge (and for Gentoo and Slackware, a bit smaller). Distance doesn't make you any smaller,
but it does make you part of a larger picture.

Re: Wich linux should I use?
Ive tried several things to get my Wifi to work, and most of them come in some file called an RPM, fedora is supposed to used them.
But I can not find .deb. I have even tried making a small bit of terminal code to get it.
and I get
So thats why I was asking. And Kubuntu would not support my sound, wifi, linksys bulky USB, ETC.
And Ubuntu supports all except my wifi.
But I can not find .deb. I have even tried making a small bit of terminal code to get it.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install madwifi
Code: Select all
coddy2@coddy2-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install madwifi
[sudo] password for coddy2:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package madwifi
coddy2@coddy2-laptop:~$
And Ubuntu supports all except my wifi.

Re: Wich linux should I use?
While we're at it blatantly advertising our distros of choice, Gentoo has no problems with madwifi drivers whatsoever. (Used one of those cards myself for a while.) But seeing how your initial selection was one of binary-only, out-of-the-box distros, Gentoo might not be the right thing for you.
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.
Re: Wich linux should I use?
I like the look of Gentoo but like the compatibility of slax, Because slax has my wifi Driver but I don't know about Gentoo I did not find it on the web site yet.
