Impressions on everyone here

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

Well, some hard English accents are hard for me to understand. Just look at the British accent. Quote from this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n1pSHzdahc

Citation from the beginning, as I hear it in english... "Ever hell'd on electric fence? It uhrts. Farm's using electric fences to keep kattel in and faxes out. (...) he get's a shock and runs uh-way. Today, houlding onto dys fence designed to shock hoases,..." It's just too soft accent for me, it's like if you had a hot potato in your throat.

Talking about accents, That sounds like the Red Alert II soviets.

On the other hand I don't even notice that Richard Hammond's speaking with accent. Probably because that's what I grew up with...

Now let me speak my native language... here's the text that has been translated into Slovak:

"Hey, I'm Inflater (well "eenflaiter" pronounced in English). I'm 15 years old. I like computers, programming and a bit of electronics, high voltage the most. I'm studying in the college-prep middle school in Púchov."

And I'm speaking this:

"Nazdar, som inflater (teda "inflejter" v angličtine). Mám 15 rokov. Bavia ma hlavne počítače, programovanie a trocha elektroniky, vysoké napätie. Navštevujem Gymnázium v Púchove."
here: http://inflater.szm.sk/acc2.wav

We have a bit "harder" accent than the russians have. And completely different language. :)

Hmm, I really didn't notice much of an accent in your speaking, inflater. Then again, the southern U.S. of A. accents stick out at me the most (*cough*dubya*cough*)

I still read this forum a lot, I just don't post much. I'm not a native Romanian but I live in Romania, hopefully that still counts. :)

Well, Hammond is speaking very clear and understandable BrE. If you regularly watch the BBC, you're getting used to a lot worse accents :). Try a good Estuary (London) English, and you're pretty soon lost :).

Hi,

I agree - I think that Hammond's accent (probably Home Counties) is one of the easiest to pick up English accents (but then, I'm from around there :) ). I now live in the Westcountry, which is one of the hardest accent to grasp (there are some samples here, along with loads of other british accents). I find that the hardest native British accent of all to understand has to be Glaswegian (for anyone who doesn't know, search around for a clip from Rab C Nesbitt!).

Cheers,
Adam

Darn, that site bugs! I select Window Media Player, and get Real Player (which I haven't installed) anyway...
