You know your a geek when.....

All off topic discussions go here. Everything from the funny thing your cat did to your favorite tv shows. Non-programming computer questions are ok too.

@inflater: I have the problem where I panic before the end of the exam to, but I have an advantage: I'm dyspraxic, so In the UK, I get to not only type my exams on a computer, but I also get 25% extra time on all public exams...

Hm.. even I suck at math.. Math i feel is not the language to represent subjects. Luckily I haven't have had to use much of it in my osdev. So its great. I feel we should have descriptions everywhere. Somehow descriptions are more effective at conveying the author's feelings and design time thoughts to the reader. But people say its math that is more effective... :?

Math infact is the best subject :D and it very interesting than rest of the sub. It encourages you to think --- you do not have to mug up anything ,in that way it is better than Computer Science --- Do you think mugging up the CRAY architecture or mugging up the pin out diagram of 8086 or 8085 quite interesting .I assure you , you will forget most of it after the exams .All the interesting computer science problems have deep roots in maths even os deving -- if you think from a theoretical perspective .

The thing with specific pin out diagrams is, they aren't something you are supposed to remember. You can easily look them up when you need them. The thing is, you have to know what a pin out diagram is, and how to use it. And that's not something you're going to forget straight after the exams.

Information is replaceable. Knowledge is not.

The problem is that we do not have to use most of the pinout diagrams we 'mug up ' . But they are required for getting a good score in the exams . This is one the reasons why higher education here is flawed . It is not at all practical .

my academic scores are just average  , but i did the labs quite well , and copied my programs sometimes and gave them to friends , so that they also get a better score 8) .

There are certain aspects of the western world I really admire , It is their total dedication to work and well as seeking perfection in whatever thing they do . Although I think it is wiser not to mention the negative aspects . I really admire these qualities

Wait, wait a minute...
Here in the western world, I think we associate that more with people from the east (China and India) than with ourselves...

You think we have a good work ethic (you're not thinking about Poland right?)
My good friend, you have a completely skewed view of us.

@SandeepMathew: I have stopped thinking about the 'mugging' part of Indian education... I just let it go and accept less marks... I follow my own education pattern and keep learning according to my interest. I would rather like to be a part of my own system than any other one...

@Salil : Same here man , I also do not give much importance to marks . But people do give importance to this false criteria called 'marks' . I know some good people who could not get a placement coz of this stupid criteria . But marks are a good indication of how much you can mug up --- so usually girls get more marks than boys :) .

Although it is not important from an ideal point of view , for all pratical purposes marks do matter :( . Because of my pathetic marks , I was initially not given an opportunity to write placement exams of some of the companies that came to campus , but i had a shot at one :) .

I don't consider myself a geek, the only 'geeky' thing I do is program.

I scored an 83/100, so I'm a high-ranking geek. I thought it was a kind of dumb test as alot of the answers were in the following question.

85% on the honest path. That "test" is too easy to fudge though.
Every good solution is obvious once you've found it.
