Ubuntu linux vs. Window Vista - they both suck!

My main OS is Windows XP, but sometimes I like trying the alternatives... Lately I've been going back and forth between Ubuntu and Vista, but I'm getting nowhere! That is to say, they both suck! Well, maybe Vista a bit more than Ubuntu.

The thing I hate most about them is the new "Aero" and "Compiz" additions. While I could disable them, I'll always know they are there and if anyone comes over, I've got to show off. But other than that, the performance of these interfaces is way down. A simple thing like pressing Alt-Tab became the long wait for pretty animated graphics.
Both of these OS's are supposed to take advantage of all the new hardware I've got, like the HPET. I would've assumed that an OS using such an advanced timer would have much better uses for it than animating stuff. Just think of all the things you could do if you replaced the PIT with HPET.
For an OS that has all the advantages of hardware acceleration, Vista is pretty dumb, and Ubuntu is not far from it. Maybe someone here will develop something that's decent one day, so we don't have to put up with this crap anymore...

...Just in case anyone was lacking motivation.

Well, to respond to the compiz thing....
I notice no speed difference in my computer when I turn all the features on.
But, maybe thats because my computer runs insanely fast with great hardware, idk.

It always bothers me when someone likes to say something about Vista - surprisingly Ubuntu too.

To be honest, I don't like the Gnome windowing system Ubuntu uses. It makes the computer feel slow with all the adjustments it does. Plus Ubuntu is pretty dumb when it comes to selecting a video mode. My crappy video card doesn't support 1280x1024 via VESA which is seemingly what Ubuntu is trying to startup (Or perhaps something higher). While Windows will search for the proper video resolution.

Keep in mind, Vista is designed to be used with the new DirectX 10 cards (At least a "mid-level" one). So the problem with using those 'pretty' features may be simply just your video card.

Look, Vista made it so you can get better hardware for cheaper. A year ago it would've cost me $700 to get a 1gb RAM 2.0GHz 60gb hd laptop. For that same $700 now (Now that Vista's been released) I get 2gb-3gb RAM 2.4GHz 100~gb hd laptop with Vista Home Premium. Vista needs a good amount of RAM to function fine (512 mb which isn't a problem for my computer which only has 1gb). I've noticed no problems with Vista on my computer. One bug here and there but they were all fixed and it runs smoothly.

You don't need to show off anything, use your computer as you wish - it's not difficult.

PS: i use fedora 8, LFS64, winxp sp2, if grub works fine with pure-64 gcc, i will run 2-LFS64

and if you want totally ruin your new pc, install vista sp1 !! :D

Nope, no flaming! If you want flaming, just compare an older GUI like Windows 3.1 to Ubuntu and Vista. Now that's responsive!
And no, it's not my NVIDIA GeForce 8500! It's just the stupid graphics...

I use either, depending on how I feel when I install a distro

Right now I'm on GNOME but soon I may go back to KDE again.

I don't really keep up to date with the various desktop enviroment, but usually i go with gnome.

weird, that's why i am using gnome/plan9port/winxpsp2, i am very proud of NOT using kde, ofcourse i had pretty experience what kde is.

Who doesn't like GNOME?

I don't like KDE. Too much eye candy and from the default Kubuntu style, the eyes do hurt.
